A hollow structural section beam bears onto a hollow structural section column with a one-inch vertical clearance and a five-sixteenths inch cap plate welded across the top. The beam and column centerlines align with a one-half inch typical gap. Five-sixteenths inch fillet welds secure the top and bottom of the cap plate to the members. A one-quarter inch fillet weld is applied on each side of the beam-to-column connection.
