The gravity column splice connects vertical wide-flange column sections using bolted channel erection aids and partial-joint-penetration groove welds. The detail accommodates W8, W10, W12, and larger shapes with specified channel sizes ranging from C6x10.5 to C9x15 fastened with seven-eighths-inch A325 bolts and washers in matched holes. Shims are provided as required, and channels are specified on near side and far side for columns exceeding thirty feet in length or one hundred pounds per foot. The hollow structural section column splice utilizes a direct partial-joint-penetration groove weld governed by the thinner column thickness minus one-sixteenth inch with a three-sixteenth-inch minimum. Erection aids are removed after splicing, and welds exposed to view are ground smooth per project specifications.
