All slab reinforcement extends continuously through the joint. The joint depth is set with a keyway whose depth equals one-half of the slab thickness typically, or alternatively, the entire surface is intentionally roughened at the contractor's option. Edge spacing and maximum dimensions govern the placement of keys and reinforcement along the slab edge.
