A steel guardrail post connects to a stair stringer using a one-quarter-inch-thick typical stiffener plate welded with a three-sixteenth-inch fillet weld. The stair fabricator provides a one-and-a-half-inch diameter steel pipe handrail atop the stringer in accordance with the California Building Code and architectural drawings.
