An upper steel column connects to a lower member via a base plate and end plate finished per American Institute of Steel Construction standards, with base plate thickness determined by the column schedule at three-quarters of an inch minimum. Vertical stiffener plates match the thickness of the column web above at three-eighths of an inch minimum and the width of the beam flange, with larger plates utilized if required by incoming connections. The connection is fitted to bear, positioned one-half inch maximum above the toe of the fillet. Fillet welds of five-sixteenths inch are applied typically on both sides of the internal stiffener plates.
