A steel beam connects to a structural steel girder web using one-inch diameter A490X bolts sized per the non-moment connection schedule, with a centerline of bolts spaced three inches maximum and three inches typical. One-half-inch stiffener plates are welded to each side of the girder web with three-eighths-inch fillet welds on three sides typical. The stiffener plates match the beam width except for a four-and-one-half-inch minimum width at the shear plate. Plates are designed for A572 Grade 50 steel. This condition applies when dimension d1 is less than dimension d2 plus six inches.
