A steel beam frames into the top of a column with a welded column cap plate and stiffener plates. A column cap plate matches the beam width or column width plus one-half inch, whichever is greater, with a thickness equal to the beam flange and a minimum three-quarter inch thickness. Three-eighths-inch thick stiffener plates are welded to each side of the column web using three-sixteenths-inch fillet welds. The beam is secured with two three-quarter-inch diameter A307 bolts at standard gauge through the cap plate on each side. A three-eighths-inch thick by twelve-inch splice plate is attached on each side with four three-quarter-inch diameter A307 bolts, maintaining a one-half-inch gap between structural members.
