A hollow structural section steel column supports a steel roof deck and steel joist. A 3/8-inch cap plate with erection bolts is attached at the top of the column and coordinated with the joist supplier. A 3/8-inch by 6-inch by 6-inch minimum plate with a 13/16-inch diameter hole is welded to the column to support the steel joist. The bottom chord of the joist is left unwelded to the plate. Weld sizes vary depending on the joist series, with a 3/16-inch fillet weld specified at the seat plate and specific weld sizes indicated for K-series versus LH and DLH series joists.
