An upper hollow structural section column bears on a five-eighths inch bearing plate, secured with four three-quarter inch diameter threaded studs. The bearing plate rests on a minimum five-eighths inch cap plate welded to the supporting lower hollow structural section column or wide flange column. Three-sixteenths inch fillet welds are applied typically around the column connections.
