An HSS beam connects to the web of a wide flange column using top and bottom structural angles sized as L4x4x1/2. The top angle length equals the column depth minus two and a half times the design parameter k, while the bottom angle length equals the column width minus one and a half inches. A maximum clearance of one-half inch is maintained between the beam and the column face. The angles are welded to the column web with five-sixteenth-inch fillet welds on both sides and to the HSS beam with one-quarter-inch fillet welds on three sides.
