An HSS beam frames into an HSS column using an intermediate HSS piece matching the column size with an A572 Grade 50 plate whose thickness matches the HSS beam wall. Complete joint penetration welds tie the top and bottom of the assembly together with backing bars placed at the joints. The plate corners may be trimmed flush with the column where no beam frames into it.
