Reinforcing bars are placed around a pipe or conduit sleeve interrupting the top reinforcement of a concrete grade beam or footing. Additional top bars matching the size and quantity of the interrupted bars are placed alongside the penetration with a lap splice. A minimum clearance of 1 1/2 inches is required between the top reinforcing bars and the sleeve. Detail notes specify minimum spacing between multiple sleeves, cover requirements, exterior caulking at the pipe-sleeve interface, and additional shear stirrups required when penetrations coincide with rebar splice locations.
