A steel beam bears directly onto a steel cap plate secured at the top of a steel column. A one-quarter-inch closure plate is welded vertically at the end of the beam and column junction with quarter-inch fillet welds. The steel column and beam sizes are determined per the structural plan and column schedule. The cap plate thickness and dimensions are specified in the column schedule.
