Framing requirements for openings within steel beams consist of L3x3x1/4 inch steel angles welded to beam flanges with a 3/16 inch fillet weld at each location. Angles are positioned against the steel beam web with a 2 inch minimum clearance. This framing applies to openings up to a maximum width of 6 feet. Holes 16 inches by 16 inches or smaller require this framing; holes smaller than 6 inches by 6 inches do not require additional framing.
