About this detail

A structural steel column connects to framing beams and a buckling restrained brace via a gusset plate and welded shear tabs. The cap plate thickness is sized to the greater beam flange thickness plus one-eighth of an inch. A typical shear plate features three seven-eighths-inch diameter erection bolts, with plate thickness equal to the beam web thickness plus one-eighth of an inch. Complete joint penetration welds secure the top and bottom beam flanges, while five-sixteenths-inch fillet welds apply on three sides typically. Stiffener plates near side and far side are provided on the column web as required, with web stiffeners and connection details determined by the buckling restrained brace supplier.
