Continuity plates are welded inside a wide-flange steel column web between the column flanges to transfer moment forces from framing beams. The plate thickness equals the thicker of the two beam flanges for two-sided moment connections, or half the beam flange thickness for single-sided connections, with a three-eighths-inch plate minimum. Complete joint penetration welds connect the plates to the column flanges, and fillet welds secure them to the column web. Clearances and edge distances maintain a one-and-a-half-inch minimum from the column K-area.
