A wide flange steel column is welded to a 3-1/2 inch thick Grade 50 ksi column base plate using 3/8 inch partial joint penetration groove welds with Charpy V-notch toughness requirements at the flanges and web. The base is anchored by fourteen 2 inch diameter ASTM A354 Grade BD threaded rods with 4 feet 8 inches of embedment, secured through square washers and embed plates. Additional lateral stability is provided by 1-1/4 inch side plates and a bottom plate made of Grade 50 steel, along with gusset plates and braces welded per manufacturer specifications and approved shop drawings. Four rows of 3/4 inch diameter by 9 inch long welded studs spaced at 8 inches on center are embedded below for composite action, totaling 64 studs.
