Steel beams frame into a structural steel column utilizing a shear plate connection with three seven-eighths inch diameter erection bolts, reduced to two bolts for W8 or W10 shapes. The shear plate thickness is equal to the beam web thickness plus one-eighth inch. Top and bottom beam flanges feature complete joint penetration welds, with cap plates sized to the greater beam flange thickness plus one-eighth inch. Stiffener plates, fabricated from 50 KSI steel, are welded on three sides with size determined by the plate thickness relationship. Standard weld access holes and bevels are provided at the column flange interfaces.
