The splice detail connects an upper wide flange column to a lower wide flange column using complete joint penetration welds on both the flanges and the web. Flange welds incorporate run-off tabs that are removed to within one-quarter inch of the flanges after welding, and back-up bars can remain in place or utilize double bevel complete joint penetration welds without backup bars as an option. Web welds include run-off tabs and back-up bars, paired with weld access holes drilled with a radius equal to the web thickness and flame cut to within one-quarter inch before grinding smooth and preheating to one hundred fifty degrees Fahrenheit. The lower column flanges are beveled when the lower flange thickness exceeds the upper flange thickness by more than one-eighth inch. Erection plates designed by the fabricator are bolted to the column webs, with contact areas ground flush and smooth after welding is completed, and optional lifting plates with erection bolts left unwelded to the column are removed prior to web welding.
