A structural steel beam web is reinforced around a circular penetration with welded steel plates on both sides of the web. The reinforced web plate thickness is selected from a schedule based on beam size, ranging from three-eighths inch for W24 and smaller up to three-quarters inch for W36, with plate grade matching the structural steel grade. The penetration maintains a minimum distance of four feet from the support, with a minimum vertical clearance of one-sixth of the beam depth above and below the opening. Welds are provided at the top and bottom of the reinforced plate with a thickness equal to half the plate thickness, and gaps are filled top and bottom typical. The horizontal plate dimensions extend N over two plus one and a half inches plus N over two around the penetration diameter N, maintaining a six-inch minimum dimension.
