A knife plate passes through a precision-cut slot in a hollow structural section member, which requires a predrilled hole at the slot ends with a diameter equal to the plate thickness plus one-quarter of an inch. A cover plate matches the hollow structural section wall thickness, which has a three-eighths inch minimum, and provides reinforcement over the slot geometry where specifically noted. The slot features a maximum one-half inch overslot at each end or an allowable tolerance for plate thickness plus one-eighth inch max. A slot at the end of the hollow structural section member accommodates the connecting gusset plate, while slots located in the middle of the hollow structural section follow specific predrilling and dimensioning criteria.
