A rectangular web opening in a structural steel beam or girder is reinforced with plate stiffeners welded to the web. The opening features a one inch radius at each corner, flame cut and ground smooth with crack inspection. Horizontal and vertical stiffeners use one half inch by flange width divided by two minimum plates with a minimum width of four inches, welded continuously with five sixteenth inch fillet welds. Maximum opening height is restricted to depth divided by two, and maximum width is restricted to depth. Plan symbol guidelines require a minimum distance of length divided by three from supports.
