A wide-flange steel column receives a steel cap plate welded to its top flanges and web. The cap plate thickness is specified as one-half inch at W10 or W8 columns and seven-eighths inch at W14 or W12 columns unless otherwise noted. Welds measure three-eighths inch typical at the flange and half the web thickness typical at the web. A shear tab is provided where indicated for connecting framing members.
