A structural steel beam connects to a steel column using an ASTM A572 Grade 50 plate matching the beam flange thickness plus one-quarter inch, aligned with the top of the beam flange. A three-eighths-inch weld access hole is provided per AISC 360 standards. Standard round holes are drilled in the beam and shear plate, with bolt sizing and quantity per schedule. Five-sixteenths fillet welds are specified typically at the connection. The steel column extends three-quarters of an inch above the beam flange at the roof.
