Two steel column shafts connect end-to-end with full contact bearing between the upper shaft and lower shaft. A filler plate is tack-welded to the upper column. Two C230x22 channels splice the columns with eight 7/8-inch diameter A325 bolts. Vertical short slotted holes are provided in the channels and standard holes in the columns. The channels are shop-bolted to the lower column.
