An HSS beam connects to a wide flange steel column using L4x4x1/2 structural angles at the top and bottom. The top and bottom angles are sized to the column width minus one and one-half inches for web connections, and to the column depth minus two and one-half inches minus k for flange connections. A maximum one-half inch clearance is maintained between the beam end and the column face. Fillet welds of five-sixteenths inch are applied to both sides of the angle-to-column interface, while one-quarter inch fillet welds are applied on three sides for the angle-to-beam connection.
