A contraction joint is formed in a concrete slab using a one-eighth-inch wide flexible thin blade sawcut to a depth of T divided by five plus or minus one-quarter inch. The sawcut must not cut the reinforcing steel and is filled with joint filler when specified by the architect of record. A fifteen-mil vapor barrier is placed beneath the slab over a six-inch granular layer and a twelve-inch minimum low-expansion zone compacted to ninety-five percent density.
