Steel beams feature round web penetrations categorized into unreinforced Type A and reinforced Type B configurations. Type A unrestrictive circular openings have a maximum diameter of D/3 and must maintain a centerline spacing of span/4 minimum from the end of the beam. Type B reinforced openings accommodate diameters up to D/2 maximum, utilizing an extra strong pipe sleeve welded with a five-sixteenths inch fillet weld and a minimum spacing of two times the diameter between penetrations. Additional requirements dictate that penetrations must be centered in the beam web, maintain a minimum allowable distance equal to depth D from framing beams, and require engineering approval for unshown openings.
