An HSS 3x3x3/16 hollow structural section column is connected to an upper beam and a lower beam using 3/8-inch thick, 4-inch wide plates aligned with the web and slotted through the HSS. Two 7/8-inch diameter machine bolts secure the upper connection, and two 7/8-inch diameter machine bolts secure the lower connection. Five-sixteenth-inch fillet welds attach the lower plate to the supporting beam flange. The upper beam and connection plate are rotated 90 degrees at similar locations.
