Steel bar joists bear on a structural steel beam, which is sized per the roof framing plan. A wood nailer matches the width of the beam flange between the bar joists and is fastened with seven-eighths-inch diameter wood screws at twelve inches on center. Roof plywood sheathing is fastened above. Angle braces measuring three inches by three inches by one-quarter inch are spaced at eight feet zero inches on center typically, welded to the beam with three-sixteenths-inch fillet welds and one-quarter-inch fillet welds. Angle braces are to be welded to the beam after the roof is installed, and brace locations must be coordinated with sprinkler pipes.
