A W8X31 steel beam bears onto a 1-inch thick by 8-inch wide A572-50 cap plate welded to the top of an HSS 5x5x1/4 hollow structural section column with a quarter-inch fillet weld. Four 1-inch diameter by 3-inch long F1852 bolts secure the beam bottom flange to the cap plate. A 3/8-inch by 3-7/16-inch A572-50 stiffener plate is welded inside the beam web directly over the column support.
