Two connection options cap a hollow structural section member using a three-eighths-inch plate sized to match the HSS dimensions per plan. Option 1 features a flush-fit cap plate welded with a size determined by the HSS thickness minus one-eighth of an inch. Option 2 provides a slightly oversized cap plate maintaining a minimum quarter-inch projection beyond the HSS wall with a three-sixteenths-inch fillet weld. Cap plates are specified for all non-moment connection locations.
