A wide-flange steel column features a welded cap plate at its top, with plate thicknesses sized at one-half inch for W10 or W8 shapes and seven-eighths inch for W14 or W12 shapes unless noted otherwise. A shear tab is welded to the column web where required. Fillet welds connect the cap plate to the column flange with a three-eighths inch size and to the web with a size equal to half the web thickness.
