Steel column splices are detailed for both web perpendicular and web parallel orientations utilizing cap plates and stiffeners welded to mill column ends. Cap plates are sized 1-1/2 inches thick for W8 or W10 columns and 2 inches thick for W12 or larger sections. Stiffener plates measuring 1/2 inch by 16 inches are provided near side and far side as required. Fillet welds are specified at 3/8 inch typical at flanges and 7/16 inch typical at webs per AISC standards, with specific weld exemptions noted for W10x and smaller members.
