A structural steel cap plate connects to the top of a hollow structural section column sized per plan. A wide flange beam bears on the cap plate with a two-sided connection where required. A quarter-inch or three-sixteenths fillet weld secures the cap plate to the HSS column. Welds are ground smooth where exposed or to avoid interference, and the cap plate overhangs the column by half an inch typically.
