Continuity plates are placed on both sides of the column web and aligned with the connecting beam flanges to transfer concentrated flange forces into the column. The plate thickness is determined based on the beam flanges, with the web plate thickness specified as half the plate thickness. A cope is provided at the column web with no weld for a distance of one-half inch per AISC dimension k1, and one and one-half inches per AISC dimension k. Welds attach the plates typically at the flange and web as indicated in the plan and detail views.
