A beam-to-column flange connection occurs at the top of a column. Steel beams connect to the column flanges using shear tabs where indicated. A cap plate is welded to the top and bottom flanges with a thickness determined by the greater of the connected flange thicknesses plus one-quarter inch, with a one-inch minimum. Internal continuity plates are installed inside the column, sized using the larger of the intersecting flange thicknesses.
