A typical crack control joint in a structural slab on grade features a top saw cut extending to one-fifth the depth of the slab with a two-inch maximum. Reinforcing steel continues uninterrupted across the control joint since the slab functions as a structural diaphragm. The assembly prohibits through-cutting or trenching across the control joint. The contractor must submit a slab on grade crack control joint plan for engineer review prior to pouring concrete.
