A steel beam connects to a hollow structural section column using a typical shear plate connection at the web and complete joint penetration welds at the top and bottom flanges. Weld access holes are provided typically at the beam web-to-flange intersections. Cap plates and continuity plates match the thickness of the thickest welded beam flange plus one-eighth inch and match the greater width of the column or welded beam flange.
