A vertical structural member with a tapered flange features an oversized slot at a gusset plate connection. The slot allows a maximum three-quarter-inch vertical overslot with six-inch and two-inch dimensional controls. The flange is tapered typically with four-inch dimensions at the base. When an overslot reaches up to a maximum of one-eighth inch, the weld size is increased to compensate for the gap.
