A six-inch thick concrete slab on grade rests on a vapor barrier, a four-inch minimum capillary break, and a prepared non-expansive fill subgrade. The slab is reinforced with number four reinforcing bars at twelve inches on center each way placed at mid-depth. A control joint features smooth three-quarter-inch diameter by fourteen-inch long dowels spaced at twelve inches on center, centered on the control joint line with one end greased. Dowels are placed horizontally and perpendicular to the control joint line using dowel racks or chairs, with slab reinforcement terminated one and one-half inches from the sawcut and a one-eighth-inch radius tooled edge at the joint.
