A wide flange beam bears onto a hollow structural section or pipe column via a column cap plate sized to match the beam width or column width plus one-half inch with a three-quarter inch minimum thickness. Three-eighths inch stiffener plates are welded to each side of the column using three-sixteenths inch fillet welds on three sides with two-inch returns. The column cap plate is secured to the column with a one-quarter inch fillet weld. A shear tab connection utilizing two three-quarters inch diameter ASTM A307 bolts at standard gauge connects the beam web to the support, with a total of four bolts configured per standard wide flange beam connection details.
