Reinforcement layout for concrete wall openings: no additional reinforcement is required for square openings 12 inches by 12 inches or less, or round openings less than 12 inches in diameter. For larger openings, maintain a minimum clearance of three times the larger opening dimension or 12 inches, whichever is greater, to the edge of any adjacent opening. Reinforcement at openings consists of two number 5 horizontal bars and two number 5 vertical bars, supplemented by one number 5 diagonal bar at each corner. Where walls contain two layers of reinforcement, provide two number 5 diagonal bars at each corner. Hook horizontal bars if the minimum development length is not available, per hook details in typical concrete wall drawings. All bars shown are in addition to standard wall reinforcement noted elsewhere.
