A steel beam extends continuously past a hollow structural section column utilizing a cap plate and a base plate welded or anchored to the members. Four three-quarter-inch diameter bolts secure the plates at the column intersections. Four stiffener plates, sized to half the flange thickness or a minimum of three-eighths of an inch, are welded to the HSS column above to reinforce the web. The cap plate is sized to match the beam flange width or the column width plus one inch, with a length equal to dimension B plus six inches. The base plate is similarly sized with a length equal to dimension A plus six inches.
