This structural detail shows a beam framing into a girder with a moment connection utilizing a top flange splice plate. The splice plate features a cross-sectional area matching the flange of the lighter beam and a minimum width equal to two times the splice plate width. Fillet welds of five-sixteenths inch size weld the splice plate around three sides symmetrically unless otherwise noted, with a minimum thickness equal to one-half the splice plate thickness. A three-quarter-inch gap is provided between the beam flange and girder web. A shear plate with multiple bolts connects the beam web to the girder web, sized per the reference detail. Butt-welded top flanges may be substituted for the splice plate where the girder flange is thicker than the beam flange.
