The steel beam connects to the column web using a connection plate with a thickness equal to the beam web thickness plus one-quarter inch. The top flange features a complete joint penetration weld with a one-fourth inch fillet weld along both edges of the back-up bar, and the bottom flange utilizes a complete joint penetration weld with the back-up bar removed after back-gouging the root pass. Continuity stiffener plates welded to the column web align with the beam flanges, sized with thickness T1 matching the thickest framing flange with a minimum of five-eighths inch in A572 Grade 50 steel. Backup stiffener plates are provided opposite the flange connections, and four-inch returns are detailed on top and bottom. Fillet welds of five-sixteenths inch size tie the plates and backup stiffeners, with specific stop clearances specified from the flange edges.
