This assembly features a steel column bearing on a beam through a 3/4-inch thick cap plate. The cap plate width is specified as 1 inch larger than the column or matching the beam flange width, whichever is greater, and is secured with four 3/4-inch diameter A325 bolts. The column is reinforced with two stiffener plates on each side, aligned with the column flanges and having a minimum thickness of 3/8 inch. The stiffener plates are attached to the beam web with 3/16-inch fillet welds on three sides, typically, while the cap plate is connected to the column with 1/4-inch fillet welds. All welds must comply with American Institute of Steel Construction Specification Section J2.
