A wide-flange steel column terminates with a cap plate welded to the top flanges and web. A one-half-inch cap plate is specified for W10 or W8 columns, while a seven-eighths-inch cap plate is used for W14 or W12 columns unless noted otherwise. Fillet welds secure the cap plate, with three-eighths-inch welds specified at the flange and half the web thickness specified at the web. A shear tab is provided where indicated for beam framing connections.
