A hollow structural section beam frames into a steel column flange. Top and bottom L4x4x3/8 angles, with widths matching the column flange, are welded with five-sixteenth-inch fillet welds to both the beam and the column. A 3/8-inch by 3-inch plate is welded to each side of the HSS beam end, maintaining a maximum half-inch gap at the column face. All exposed steel members are specified to be hot-dip galvanized or zinc-painted.
