Continuity plates are welded inside the column flanges aligned with the beam flanges, secured with three three-quarter-inch-diameter erection bolts. A cap plate is provided at the top of the column with similar shaping, welded per the strong-axis condition. Complete joint penetration welds are specified at the top and bottom flanges with demand-critical designations per AWS D1.8. Weld access holes with a one-half-inch minimum radius are cut in the plates.
